Aims:

  • To understands what a Sports Dentist is and their Role within the Sports and Exercise Medicine Team
  • To identify what the most common types of dental trauma there are
  • To understand the immediate management and treatment of dental trauma
  • To understand the role of the Sports Dentist on an international sporting event on match day

The delegate by the end of the lecture should be able to:

  • Have a greater understanding of a Sports Dentist role in the Sports and Excercise Medicine team
  • Have a greater understanding of what types of dental trauma may present to you in practice
  • How to deal with the 3 most common types of dental trauma
  • Appreciating the field of play/pitch side role of a sports dentist on match day

 

Umair Mohammed Bio

Umair Mohammed graduated from the University of Dundee in 2010 and gained early experience working across Edinburgh and Fife in various practice, hospital, and community dental settings. He then moved to Australia, working in both Sydney and Perth before returning to the UK.
Back in Scotland, he spent five years in an NHS practice before joining private dentistry in 2018 at Cherrybank Dental Spa and SmilePlus Dental Care. In 2014, he earned the MFDS RCS (Edinburgh) qualification.

In 2022, Umair became one of only five dentists worldwide to complete an MSc in Sports Dentistry (with distinction) from UCL Eastman Dental Institute. He was named to the Dean’s List for academic excellence.

Deeply committed to sports dentistry, he co-founded the UK Sports Dentistry Association and is a member of the European Association for Sports Dentistry. He lectures on the online course Tackling Teeth and co-hosts the Sports Dentistry Podcast.

Umair works with Edinburgh and Scotland Rugby, Cricket Scotland, and the Scottish Institute of Sport, delivering care to elite athletes and offering pitch-side support during matches. He was also the official sports dentist for basketball 3×3 and beach volleyball at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

In addition to his dental career, Umair has a strong background in competitive cricket. He represented Scotland at international level in 2016, including two senior caps and participation in the ICC Under-19 World Cup in Sri Lanka. He now plays for Carlton Cricket Club and is a member of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) at Lord’s.
