Aims:

  • To provide an understanding of the medicolegal landscape in Orthodontics
  • To discuss current regulations and professional standards related to mediolegal issues in Orthodontics
  • To discuss the ‘common problems’ clincians become entrapped by.

Learning Objectives:

  • To be able to write clear and comprehensive patient records to support medicolegal compliance
  • To be familiar with the regulatory and ethical frameworks governing Orthodontics
  • To be able to describe the key medicolegal concepts such as Breach of Duty and Causation.

Dr Ian Hutchiuson Bio

Ian qualified from Newcastle in 1991 and Specialist training in Bristol (96-99).

He was a Committee member of the British Lingual Orthodontic Society (2006-2014) and Chairman(2015-2016)( and founded the Warwick MSc in Lingual Orthodontics. Ian also has an interest in Restorative treatment and was a Faculty member of the Spear Academy in Arizona.

Ian works in private practice in Chepstow where he undertakes not just Orthodontic treatment but also Restorative and, Facial Aesthetic’s. In addition to clinical work, he is an expert witness for the DDU, T Legal and, RWK Goodman amongst others.

He runs his own Orthodontic courses ranging from Aligners to TADS as well as the ‘Transferable Skills Program’ with ex-UKSF partners.
