Aims:

  • To clearly articulate the difference between the intact tooth and the restored tooth
  • To outline a comprehensive approach to adhesive dentistry
  • To highlight some of the pitfalls with newer materials.

Learning objectives:

  • How the natural tooth functions biomechanically and how preparing cavities impacts this
  • Contemporary management of hard tissue defects and minimise the risk of pulp exposures in permanent teeth
  • The importance of adhesion and the challenges of dentin bonding
  • How best to manage the configuration of the cavity and the volume of the restorative material.

Hugh Byrne Bio

Dr Hugh Byrne graduated from Trinity College in 1995 and spent the next years working in London in a large mixed general practice. Following his return to Ireland in 2000, he opened a private practice in Dublin with a focus on adhesive dentistry. Hugh has been placing direct composite restorations and partial indirect adhesive inlays and overlays since 200o, allowing him to have over 20 years of clinical follow ups with his own patients.

Hugh teaches in the Dublin Dental University Hospital being attached to the Department of Restorative Dentistry. He is also a co-founder of “mimétika”, providing training in advanced adhesive dentistry through lectures, hands-on simulations and mentoring.
