About Irene Black

I graduated from Glasgow University in 1980, gained my Membership of the Faculty of General Dental Practitioners in 1999 and the Certificate in Effective Dental Management in 2005. My husband and I owned and worked in an NHS Dental Practice in Eaglesham for 36 years.

I was a Dental Practice Adviser in Greater Glasgow and Clyde Health Board for thirteen years. I have worked for NHS Education for the last eleven years. My interest in education developed during my nine years as a Vocational Trainer.

My role as an Assistant Director for NHS Education began with the remit for Infection Control and Decontamination. I am now part of the NES Clinical Effectiveness team with the wider remit for patient safety. My role currently includes a secondment to Healthcare Improvement Scotland as the National Clinical Lead for Dentistry as part of the Primary Care Scottish Patient Safety Programme. This has involved supporting a dental collaborative introducing dental teams to Quality Improvement Methodology to use in practice.

In my spare time, I enjoy cooking, holidays and going to the theatre. I am part of a book group which combines critical reading with an element of wine tasting. To maintain a balanced lifestyle these activities are counteracted by cycling, Pilates and going to the gym.
